Harold W. Brooks 

Harold Joined the board of Cardea Health Care in 2024. Immediate past president of the American Red Cross Alumni Association. He is a volunteer consultant to the International Federation of Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies. Serves as a member of the AARP California Executive Council. He served as senior fellow with Northeastern University’s Global Resilience Institute. His 44-year career with American Red Cross included serving as Senior Vice President of International Services; CEO of SF Bay Area Red Cross Chapter and years of fund raising and executive management. His career also included working overseas as Country Director for Peace Corps in Papua New Guinea and with Africare in Kenya. He is a former member of the board of regents for his alma mater, Loyola-Marymount University. Harold has three adult children with his wife Alison and three grandchildren.

Karie Dewan, Treasurer

Karie Dewan, CPA, brings to Cardea Health over 20 years of experience in the nonprofit financial and accounting field. Karie most recently served as the CFO at the Stupski Foundation, a private family foundation dedicated to community change, where she served as a key member of the leadership team, responsible for the development of Foundation’s financial management strategy, oversight of internal operations, and the development of the organization’s strategic goals. Karie began her career in public accounting with KPMG and then moved to private industry working for a publishing company and internet startup. When she arrived in the Bay Area in early 2000’s, she was inspired to apply her skills to support positive social change and began working with nonprofits and foundations to help support their social impact missions. Karie and her family have now lived in the Alameda County for two decades and is dedicated to the community she calls home.

Koren Stevenson

Koren Stevenson focuses her practice on managed care payor operations and contracting.  She has been a member of the senior leadership team at a health plan based in the East Bay, Managed Care Counsel at a northern California health system and is currently Senior Counsel with Delta Dental of California. Ms. Stevenson received her law degree from Georgetown University Law Center.  While at Georgetown she served as President of the Black Law Students Association and received the Dean's Certificate of Service for her commitment to the law center community.

Lenore McDonald Gunst

Board Secretary

Lenore McDonald is a professional advocate and ebullient fundraiser. Lenore raises critical funds to enable frail seniors to live independently in their communities for as long as possible and brings the voice and needs of older adults to the attention of funders and elected officials. As the Director of Fund Development and Government Relations for Center for Elders’ Independence (CEI) in Oakland for 10 years, Lenore leads the organization’s PACE and Supportive Housing initiative to support homeless and at-risk individuals by enrolling them in CEI’s Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), a Medicare managed care program specifically for older adults with complex health needs. She was responsible for CEI’s role in Project Room Key in Alameda County during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lenore has presented about PACE & Supportive Housing for the American Society on Aging, National PACE Association, and has co-produced seven Bay Area Senior Health Policy Forums with On Lok, providing non-profit and government leaders to collaborate about policies that will advance the needs of older adults in California.

Brandi Taliano

Brandi Taliano is a dedicated and fearless director for Five Keys, a Bay Area non-profit dedicated to social justice and reintegration. Brandi has worked closely with Cardea Health to help provide comprehensive social and medical services to a medically frail formerly homeless population in Alameda County. Brandi works on the front line of the fight for social justice, and brings compassion and lived experience to the Cardea Board.

Michelle Schneidermann

Member at Large

Michelle Schneidermann, MD, is director of the California Health Care Foundation’s (CHCF’s) People-Centered Care team, which works to ensure that Californians — particularly those enrolled in Medi-Cal — receive responsive, comprehensive, and coordinated care that supports their health and well-being. She leads CHCF’s efforts in the care of populations with complex behavioral / physical health conditions and health related social needs.

Prior to joining CHCF, Dr. Schneidermann served as a medical director of the Medi-Cal managed care plan, Alameda Alliance for Health, where she provided clinical support and oversight with a focus on care coordination and special projects. In this role, she led efforts to build and expand programs for high-risk members such as Community-Based Palliative Care, the Health Homes Program and the Whole Person Care collaboration with Alameda County Health Care Services.

Before that, Dr. Schneidermann spent more than 14 years as a clinical professor and physician leader at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). In addition to being a primary care doctor and hospitalist at San Francisco General Hospital, she was medical director of the Inpatient High User Care Management Program, led Care Transitions initiatives and was the founding Medical Director of the San Francisco Medical Respite.

In addition to serving on Cardea’s board, she also serves as a commissioner for Alameda County Health Care for the Homeless, a program of the Alameda County Health Care Services Agency. Dr. Schneidermann received her medical doctorate from the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University and completed her internal medicine residency at UCSF.

Temesgen Woldeyesus

Dr. Tem Woldeyesus is a community practitioner in Oakland dedicated to advancing community-centered models of care that improve ease, access, and quality, with a focus on better serving marginalized communities. He earned his medical degree and completed his residency training in Family and Community Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). At Roots Community Health, Dr. Woldeyesus directs the Cut Hypertension Program, a pioneering barbershop based model that integrates blood pressure screening, medication management, and barber led health coaching, and leads the development of an equity driven telehealth program designed to meet the needs of historically underserved patients.
